A sketch from a magazine feature.
To me the story of this piece is more about the execution rather than the outcome. At the time I was looking a lot at Hockney’s sketchbooks and studying the way he uses thick layers of crayon to mix and blend colour like paint. I’d just been given a packet of those cheap crayons you’d get as a child when your parents were kitting up for a new term at school, standard 12 colours from somewhere like WH Smiths. From memory you could never get those crayons to blend together, so it felt like a challenge using them to try to replicate that Hockney style and find the colours I was seeing in the portrait.
To me, as to many people, Bowie is a great inspiration. I first got into his music from listening to my Dad’s copies of his records as a child. Held up at gunpoint, I’d say my favourite tune was Heroes.

I seem to get a lot of feedback about this one on my DeviantArt page
